LAHORE (web desk) – Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif Friday blasted a court judgment that found his brother and former prime minister Nawaz guilty of corruption.
“This will be remembered as one of the darkest chapters in Pakistan’s political history,” Shahbaz said at a press conference.
“The PML-N party rejects (this) unjust verdict. There are many legal loopholes in the judgment. No written proofs were provided in this case,” he added.
“Who gave you motorways? Who made Pakistan a nuclear power? Who brought CPEC investments to this coutry? Who ended loadshedding? Who was the reason behind the economic uplift of Gwadar? The credit goes to Nawaz Sharif.”
Shehbaz, who succeeded his brother as the president of the PML-N party after the latter s ouster by the Supreme Court over undecalred income, also lashed out at the anti-graft watchdog over its treatment of the Sharif family.
“Mian Sahib and his daughter appeared before the court at least 109 times. NAB, in the past, has given clean chits to those facing corruption cases.”
Nawaz was sentenced to 10 years in prison over his family’s purchase of upscale London flats. His daughter Maryam, widely seen as his chosen political heir, was sentenced to seven years in prison. Maryam’s husband and PML-N lawmaker Captain (retired) Muhammad Safdar was sentenced to one year in prison, prosecution lawyer Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi said.
Abbasi added that NAB court ordered Sharif to pay a fine of 8 million pounds ($10.6 million) and Maryam was fined 2 million pounds, while ordering the confiscation of the London properties on behalf of the Pakistani government.
Both Sharif and his daughter were in London on Friday with Sharif’s wife, Kulsoom, who is being treated there for cancer and is in a coma after suffering a heart attack last month.
